Ports 2005
PORTS 2005 will examine the rapidly changing management, operation, design and building of maritime engineering works and ports, with emphasis on new technologies and the interdisciplinary aspects. A port is not simply a place where goods are stored and prepared to continue their journey by sea. Modern ports are gateways to trade, from where goods must pass through in the quickest, safest and most efficient way. To achieve these results, operators must employ the most novel information and communication technologies in the port areas. The importance of port economy is now extended to a much wider area than before as the performance of a single port can affect the economy of an entire region. This conference aims to provide a forum where the complex changes that are currently taking place in maritime engineering and the port industry and its operation can be discussed. The topics to be covered include port management, private and public ports, contributions from private or public sources, ship and port operators, multimode transportation in ports, environmental aspects, financial and legal aspects, multi-use of ports, including tourism and marinas, information systems for ports and shipping, navigational aspects, systems of loading and unloading, emerging technologies in shipping and ports, standardisation and ergonomics, marine engineering works, maintenance problems and construction issues and inland waterways among others. |
